Ideas for counteracting smart phone usage in classrooms

Rozovsky, Rae

I would find various way to show students how to have fun outside of technology. For example, having a picnic or playing games outside. I would stress human connections without the distractions of your phone. For example, working on group projects with no cell phone usage.

Gange, Alexandra Paige

Something that I would do in my classroom is interactive demonstrations and interactive assignments. I feel that my having movement incorporated into a lesson keeps people engaged and involved. Additionally having people interacting together promotes relationships and group work. If people are involved in an interactive experience they are less likely to reach for their mobile device because they are distracted and using their hands to learn and create.

Krueger, Danielle Lauren

I would create boundaries at the very start of the school year, so the students won’t get in the habit of using their smartphones while thinking it’s appropriate. I would engage my students in other activities that are interactive, so they are distracted and don’t think about picking up their smartphones. I will analyze their reactions to these activities and ask for feedback so I know how to improve my teaching lessons and strategies in the most suitable way.

Pickett, Bryce Kristian

Utilize different measures to keep student engaged like toys or boards or physical activity.

Kaleel, Alexandra Rose

I do believe in some ways that technology can advance and assist in greater learning. However, when used incorrectly, it can negatively effect students ability to learn and retain information. As a teacher, I would make sure to keep class exciting and interesting so students do not feel the need to access their technology.

Gallagher, Richard (Conrick)

The teaching process should change I think. The way we learn today is relatively the same way we have learned when our parents or grandparents have learned. If technology is changing and advancing the way It works, why shouldn’t we change the way we learn by enhancing our brains by the way we learn. More hands on activity I believe will change this. Aka physical activity and on your feet thinking.

 Dresbach, Casey Jenna

I will encourage a balance between usage and non usage. I will offer interactive measures within my curriculum that encourages students to use technology beneficially as opposed to subconsciously or better yet distractedly. Ex. Encourage both physical note-taking and experiential with the aid of technology as a resource.

Danielle Emarks

I would allow the use of technology, but to a certain extent. I think technology benefits the students for many reasons and if the technology is used strictly for academics.

Cameron, Emma

To counteract artificial intelligence in my classroom, I would try to make children aware that technology can be useful to learn some things, but that it is also important to learn without technology as well. I would emphasize the importance of creating relationships with the people around them by doing group activities in the classroom where they can’t use their iPhones, or don’t even think about using their phones.

Gonzalez, Stefani

I would counteract the use of touchscreen devices in my classroom by emphasizing the importance of hands-on learning away from screens. I would include activities and opportunities for my students to interact with one another face-to-face, not face-to-screen.

Finnerman, Kelly

If I could change one thing about artificial intelligence in a classroom, it would be not to let teachers become AI or let students use AI things in a classroom. However, still allow computers and phones if need be. Keep students engaged in classrooms so they don’t use their phones and computers.

Longmuir, Stephanie Mae

To counteract the effects of touch screen devices in my classroom I am going to really try to first, educate my students on the severity of this topic and raise awareness (because though it seems obvious, it might not be so clear to many people). Secondly, I will focus on really emphasizing human connection and fostering relationships among the students so they don’t succumb to how society is becoming. I really want them to be great communicators and learn and practice empathy. I could do lots of activities requiring interaction instead of having seated lectures.

Shinder, Sami

To counteract the effects of touch screens in class I would allow smart devices to be present and encourage usage by incorporating it into my lessons. This way, there is a balance between using them and not and smart devices will not be taken advantage of in class.

Marks, Jacqueline

I would organize the class to be more hands on and less driven from outside devices such as phones. I worked at a day camp with 4-5 year olds with a no phone policy. Each day the campers learned how to interact with one another.

Soens, Jessica Rose

Encourage students to have face to face communication without discouraging the use of technology. Maybe utilizing games or activities that don’t require technology in the classroom.

Magnone, Devon Haley

In order to counter act the effect of touch screen devices in the class room I would limit the use inside the class. I would abolish it completely because then I feel as if it’s creates a tense environment with too many rules. However, it is a massive distraction and most students should be able to live without their phones for one hour of the day.

Mouacdie, Drew

“Life is in the present moment.”

Velasco,  Valeria

I would encourage students to keep busy with their hands instead, since we are so use to using technology and keeping our hands busy. So the use of white boards and physical items to keep busy, the more physically active we are the more engaged they can be!

Frankel, Paige Bailey

In order to change the current course of our world and therefore protect things such as independence, feelings and meaning, I am going to continue talking to people without technology as much as possible. I think it’s important to continue emphasizing the importance of learning to do things without technology.

Corrigan, Mae

In order to limit the affects of technology in my class, I would try to assist my students in finding a balance. As it is a valuable source to learn from and interact with, it is hard to completely toss it away. I think the main issue is with immediate gratification that our phones give us. Keeping the class occupied, rewarding, and interesting helps to hold their attention. I would play games and place the students in groups to work together in order to further their relationships.

Sheena, Megan Danielle

If I had a class, I would counteract artificial intelligence by doing group assignments. I would do this so people would interact with each other and have a break from always interacting with their technology.

Petrillo, Marisa Lynn

Something that I would do in the classroom to counteract the artificial intelligence takeover of our world is to not use the electronic devices that I have with me while learning. This means my laptop and iPhone and any other electronic device and using a notebook or group work so there isn’t a need to reach for my phone or search through the internet.

Kuperman, Amanda

1. Teach younger kids the aspects of technology that aren’t human
2. Enforce both social interactions via technology and in person
3. Teach students some of the math skills that we have let technology figure out for us
4. Find a happy medium
