Creativity in Education. Changing the Paradigm

Do schools kill creativity? | Sir Ken Robinson

After watching Sir Kenneth Robinson's ideas about roll of creativity in education, we concluded that as educators, we do not know what is going to happen and that we do not know what the future is going to be like. Several themes emerged as a result of the discussion:

Talent vs. School System
Creativity = Literacy
Children = Creativity

There is also a hierarchy of Subjects
Education, as it is today, remains disembodied
Academic ability is primarily geared towards industrialization
There is a correlation between technology, population explosion and academic/degree inflation

The conclusion is that intelligence is:

Diverse
Dynamic
Distinct

The students were invited to write a group proposal explaining how they would change instruction in regards to:

Class setting
Goals and Objectives of the Class
What would they prioritize
What Style of instruction would they use
How would they balance the use of technology with embodied/hands on work

Class Activity

Melanie, Sam Danielle, Jacqueline and Arielle will have their students use their bodies to complete activities such as a treasure hunt.

Emma, Page, Steph and Mae will put away technology and use games to teach subjects.

Jess, Amanda, Victoria , Drew, DeAndre will use technology to teach first, then not use it, in order to have the students compare and contrast the experiences.

Marisa, Rae, Devon, Ali will promote interaction and collaboration through group work in order to discuss current events.

Nicole, Megan, Kelly and Dani  will train students to not use the phone during instruction, and only use it when needed
