Installation Art: Geometric Shapes

Installation art is a term generally used to describe artwork located in a three-dimensional interior space as the word "install" means putting something inside of something else. A three-dimensional artwork meas to transform a viewer's experience of an interior space, through a combination of mediums, interactivity, and immersive elements. On the other hand, assemblage is a three-dimensional work of art made from combinations of materials including found objects or non-traditional art materials. Readymades, first introduced as an art element by Marcel Duchamp, are ordinary manufactured objects that the artist selects and modifies as an antidote to what Duchamp called "retinal art." Retinal art is a term that Duchamp used to describe work that was “in the service of the mind,” as opposed to a purely “retinal” art, intended only to please. The pieces the students put together are a combination of these three concepts.

Daysi
Nicole, Kelly, Megan, Dani

The piece represents how readymade objects can be arranged to create something new. Our piece was named Daysi, which, besides being the name of a flower, it also means "day's eye."

Breath of Fresh Air
Camila, Victoria, Drew, DeAndre

This piece invites us to go outside and find meaning and enjoyment in natural elements.

Upcycle
Stefani, Ariella, Mae, Stephanie, Bryce

The piece represents the possibilities of using recycled materials to build structures that besides their symbolic meaning could also generate functional ideas.

Coexistence:  The Circle of Life
Jess, Emma, Paige, Amanda

The piece represents how shapes and colors can coexist in nature generating complex ideas that help us to understand "the bigger picture."

Be There or Be Square
Mel, Casey, Sami, Marisa, Ali

The piece represents how nature's elements can be put together to embrace natural beauty in order to move away from materialistic things and promote the protection and preservation of natural resources.

Miami Time

This piece is called “Miami Time.” It embodies taking a minute to appreciate the natural beauty of the fast paced city of Miami. Some of the various shapes included are circle, a sphere, a rectangle, triangle, sphere, and lines.

  1. This redefines what art is. Instead of creating something out of only artistic materials, we use materials that are not made for art, and design something in order to teach, not just to please the eye and to be misinterpreted. We design something, then we teach the significance of it and what it is supposed to mean. Art is not just something that is done and then left for interpretation always, but it too can teach.
