Phenomenological Approach: Esperiential Learning
The students were introduced to the concept of phenomenology as a philosophical frame for teaching through the arts. Using the students' own experience to build their own knowledge base is a revolutionary concept for established educational programs that do not see the arts as a conduit for the acquisition academic information.
They were given the task of searching the Miami Dade County Publics Schools (MDCPS) curriculum; then to check MDCPS' curriculum for one of the arts of their choice. They looked for a lesson plan template and created a lesson plan that included: objective, assessment, activities, evaluation.
A discussion followed through which students shared their choices for teaching. Bellow, some samples of the lesson plans created by the students:
Alexandra Gange
Objective (the
students will): The students will learn the periodic table by using music and
song.
Activities / Strategies: Students will form groups of 4 and
collaborate to make a song- using their vocals, creating their own beat using
objects around them- to memorize the order of the different elements on the
periodic table.
They can use the rhythm of popular songs they know but must
change the lyrics and use objects that are readily available in the classroom
to create a memorization song.
They are not required to incorporate the entire periodic
table but should include all elements up to line 5. They can separate in the
classroom or use space outside the classroom so that they can think and create
with minimal distractions.
This lesson is going to be taught to students in their
Freshman year of high school.
Assessment / Evaluation: participation, performance, group
work
Evaluation: The evaluation will be to perform their song in
front of the class as a group. We will watch everyone’s performance and then at
the end of class, we will have a brief written quiz.
The quiz will numbered for the numbers of the periodic table
and the students will be required to fill in as many of the names as they can
after the activity is over.
Another academic course that can benefit from this art:
music and the creation of song can be used in a math class to turn formulas
into songs so that students can memorize them when taking tests or using
equations.

Middle School Students
The students will learn how to comfortably express natural body movement in the presence of other class members by create an eight moves phrase.
Activities:
- I will play various genres of music and lead the class in an exercise of letting their bodies lead the way and think for themselves, without the mind having too much control over the movements
- We will move around the room with no specific shape or reason
- We will take up the entire space of the room
- As the students become more comfortable on their own, they can then interact with others through their movement without verbally expressing interest to collaborate
Assessment:
I am going to take a step back and make sure all students are fully
immersed within their own movements and getting lost in their
interpretation of the music.
Evaluation:
We will sit in a circle and each student will share how the
exercise made them feel and their main take away from the exercise
(relaxation, fun, exploring body movement, enjoying the music, etc.).
Academic Relevance:
helping students feel comfortable with themselves and in front of
their peers in their classes (sharing their opinions, asking questions,
etc.)
