The Lesson Plan: Teaching How to Create a Comedy Skit

Students had the opportunity to get into groups and discuss two lesson plan templates. One template was used as a reference in regards to the structure of the lesson plan, while the other was looked at as a way to understand certain concepts related to comedy.

GRADE LEVEL  / 10th Grade (One hour and 15-minute class)

Objective: The students will demonstrate the ability to learn how to plan and create a comedy skit (recorded video) in regards to something funny that has occurred in their lives.

Materials needed: phone camera and papers

Step 1: Talk about how our skit came from a combination of experiences we’ve all had or seen. Say how we once saw a video of a prank that showed a teacher answering a student’s phone and hearing that the student was pregnant, we thought that was an interesting prank. We emulated that, but added our own twist to it. We showed a student constantly being picked on and accused of cheating, when she was simply trying to take an exam. The plot twist was that she was indeed cheating, and in the end failed the class.

Step 2: After explaining the purpose behind our skit, we will ask the students to write a brief description of a funny experience they have had or seen.

Step 3: We will split the class into groups based on who they are sitting next to. The groups will have 3-4 students.

Step 4: Students in each group will then share their experiences and come to a decision as to what their skit will be about. They can either combine ideas, choose one persons idea, or start over/create one together.

Step 5: After choosing their topic, the students will plan-out their skits on paper and show the teacher for approval before starting to film it. The students should make sure to keep their plans, as they will turn it in at the end.

Step 6: The students will then be excused to use their environment to come up with creative ways to bring their videos to life. The students will be given 30 minutes to film and edit their video.

Step 7: Groups will then be randomly assigned a number which will indicate the order of the video presentations.

Step 8: After all the groups have their numbers, the teacher will have the students begin to present their skits.

Step 9: After every video is presented, the groups will be asked to explain their skit and their creative process for their skit.

Step 10: The students will be given a few minutes to write a quick reflection on: how this experiences was, if they enjoyed it, and if they could do it again what would they change? The students will then turn in the reflection, skit plan, and video.

Comments

  1. I think incorporating comedy into teachers lessons plans is important for kids. Getting into groups and performing a skit not only keeps things interesting for the kids but it lets them open their mind to more creative things. Letting them express themselves. The most creative kids are the shy ones. its important to do group work so those kids who always feel left out now have a place to let their ideas flow. Performing a comedy skit can really let the class relax and just laugh No one judging. Kids should laugh and have a good time at school. It can be stressful sometimes

  2. Including comedy in a lesson plan is a way to grasp students attention in a creative and engaging way. Students will be able to be creative and use their own ideas and feelings towards a piece of work. It is a way to engage all students in a way they view as fun. Additionally, with assignments like this, students can step out of their comfort zone in a safe environment where all of their peers are doing the same thing and can learn from others.
