Art Through Meditation

Objective: To teach students a method on how to reduce stress and become more relaxed and the

to channel this sense of relief into art.

Time: 15 minutes

Age group: College students ( but could be used in any age group)

Activities: Begin by explaining to the students the benefits of meditating. Next, have them try

meditating themselves for about 5 minutes. Have everybody put all of there phones away and

having them clear their desks except for one sheet of paper. Tell students to sit up in there chairs

or allow them to lie on the floor if they wish to. Turn all of the lights off in the classroom. Tell

the students to close their eyes and to make no effort to control their breath. They should just

breathe normally. Tell them to clear their mind and focus on their breathe and how they’re body

moves as they breathe through each inhale and exhale. They should notice the way there body

moved as they took breaths. They should observe things like they’re rib cage, stomach and chest.

Focus on your breath without controlling its pace.

Tell them to now focus on the first thing that pops into their mind. They should analyze that one

thing and how it makes them feel. These emotions, thoughts and feelings will then be used to

create a drawing.

Assessment:. After having them meditate, have them reflect on how this experience made them

feel personally and how it helped them with their art. This will be useful in seeing if they

understood and learned the lesson.

Subjects this could be used in: This could be used in any class in order give students a short

break during school in order to relieve stress. Although the age group I had chosen for this

activity was college students, this could actually be used in any age group. It could be beneficial

in elementary school levels to calm down students when they are very excited and jittery toor for

college students in order to give them a breather from all the stress they have to deal with.

Meditating proves as a way for students to feel one with there body as they have a chance to

clear everything that is on there mind and just think about body movement and breathing.

Channeling this sense of relief could help with the making of art
