Marisa Petrillo

Setting:
First day of ASL class – 9thGrade

Objective:
Familiarize the students with American Sign Language by guiding them through very introductory aspects of the language.

Activities:
1.    Review some fun and interesting facts about deaf culture and ASL in general to hook students onto the lesson
2.    Go through the ASL alphabet as a class, having all students sign each letter at the same time
3.    Introduce a very basic form of a sentence
4.    Allow students 3 minutes to personalize this sentence using all of what they’ve learned so far in the lesson

Assessment:

Have 3 students who feel comfortable with their signing volunteer to sign in front of the class, whilst adding on a challenge sentence, allowing them to explore what it’s like to interact with one another using sign for the first time.
