Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS)

Image
Link:  Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) Today, we had a special visitor, Hope Torrents, the School Programs Director of the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami. Ms. Torrents spent some time learning the names of the students in the class. Then, she projected an image on the screen and asked: What is going on here? The students began to comment on the piece. After each comment she pointed at the parts of the painted the students referred to. Then, she paraphrased what the students had said. The next question aimed at expanding on the conversation: What do you see that makes you think that? The question further invited the students to add information based on their own perception. They used conditional language in order to leave room for other opinions. Example: Brice might be a hurricane fan. (the word might makes the sentence conditional) Then, Kelly and Brice volunteered to facilitate the process again as they aded the same set of questions H...

Then, they were asked to choose the theory they thought they had applied to their previous task when they worked on their fairy tales. T H E O R I E S       Behaviorism       Behaviorist   thinkers including  Thorndike, Pavlov and Skinner  have hypothesized that learning        is a change in observable behavior caused by external stimuli in the environment. The key        principle of Behaviorism is the reward or punishment of a new behavior, commonly described       as the 'carrot and stick' approach to learning.        Cognitivism        Cognitivism replaced  Behaviorism  as the dominant learning paradigm in the 1960s and         ...

Fairy Tales: Story Boards, Tableau Vivant and Snap Shots

Image
Students chose a fairy tale and structured the story line, condensed it, assigned characters to the members of the group, created tableaux scenes and took snap shots of the scenes created. From a directorial point of view, the purpose was to organize the story through a number of frames (snap shots) that when put together, in order, will make the story more understandable and easy to tell. SHREK Shrek , a green  ogre  who loves the solitude of his swamp, finds his life interrupted when countless fairytale creatures are exiled there by the fairytale-hating and vertically-challenged  Lord Farquaad  of Duloc. An angered Shrek decides to ask Farquaad to exile them elsewhere. He brings along a talking  Donkey , who is the only fairytale creature willing to guide him to Duloc. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST One winter's night, an enchantress disguised as a beggar offers a cold-hearted prince a rose in exchange for shelter. When he refuses, she transform...
